Le Picatier Cuvée Marie-Jeanne 2016
Roanne, Loire Valley, France
Gamay
ABV 13.5%
Cellar-release!
Very, very old-vine gamay grown on the very loose, decomposed granitic soils of Roanne (about an hour west of Beaujolais, in the upper Loire), vinified by Christophe and Geraldine Pialoux.
There’s lots of power and information from the old-vines which has taken a little bit of extra time in bottle to harmonise, but tasting the wine today, there’s excellent balance between the sweet red fruit and the more stalky elements, and with all the heady, expressive aroma we would expect from these loose soils. It’s entered a great, great window for drinking.
