Vinyer de la Ruca Elio 2021 (1L)
Banyuls-sur-Mer, France
Grenache, Mourvèdre
13% ABV.
Vinyer de la Ruca is the project of Manuel Di Vecchi Staraz. Manuel is originally from Tuscany but now lives and works in Banyuls-sur-Mer where he looks after a number of small parcels of old vines of grenache, carignan and mourvèdre.
The grapes grow on old bush vines planted on sheer shale terraces at the foot of the Pyrenees and just a short walk from the sea. The site is bathed in sun but kept relatively cool by high winds throughout the year. Yields here are super, super low.
Manuel works the vineyards by hand and with the help of his mule, Ullamp. Once in the cellar, the grapes are destemmed by hand, crushed by foot and fermented and aged in old barrels or terracotta amphorae. Then, the wines are run to beautiful one-litre bottles which are individually hand-blown by a local friend and artist (and are, in themselves, collector’s items).
These wines are always enthralling – concentrated, deep, dark and very mineral – and are available in very low quantities.
