L'egrappille ZiD(u) 2022
Languedoc, France
Syrah, Gamay
13% ABV.
Catherine has done a truly exceptional job in vinifying this wine. A high proportion of whole bunches and berries has captured the most intensely delicious fruit, both aromatically and on the palate, and the length of maceration has coaxed a beautifully fitting level of balancing minerality from the skins. And satisfyingly varietal, ZiD(u) in 2022 really shouts syrah from the rooftops and is a reminder of how truly more-ish this variety can be.
Challenging conditions in 2021 prompted Catherine to seek out some négoce fruit, and happily, this led her to start working with this fantastic organic site in Minervois, farmed by a friend, Thierry. In 2022, Catherine’s own yields were heavily affected by mildew, and as a result, almost all of the fruit in this vintage has come from Thierry’s site.
Typical of the area, Thierry’s site is calcareous, warm and dry, creating wines which, compared to those grown by Catherine in the Auvergne, have a more Mediterranean, sunkissed and fleshy style of fruit, albeit with more tense and direct limestone-influenced shape and acidic structure.
