Schnabel Legionär 2020
Styria, Austria
Sauvignon Blanc
12% ABV.
Breathtaking macerated sauvignon blanc.
Karl and Eva’s home and vineyards are situated on the ancient and very rocky Sausal hill in south Styria, but they also work with this wonderful site a bit further to the south, closer to the Slovenian border. Though not too far away, the soil here is very different – much, much younger, with a very high limestone content – and as a result the structure of the wines grown here is quite different, with less minerality and more direct acidity.
This was destemmed and macerated for about two weeks before being pressed off to old barrels for fermentation and elevage.
2020 is a great year for the domaine, with excellent physiological ripeness resulting in open fruit profiles and elegant phenolic structure. Tasting today, after a few years in bottle, the wines from this site are particularly resolved, expressive and delicious.
We couldn’t recommend anything more highly than a wine from this couple.
