Domaine de Sang des Innocents Apeiron 2020
Lorraine, France
Pinot Gris, wild varieties
14% ABV.
Phenomenal macerated pinot gris from a fascinating part of the world.
Bruno Vacon established this tiny domaine just under 15 years ago, planting vines on a sun-drenched bend above the Meuse river in the region of Lorraine, between Alsace and Champagne. Much of this part of France was decimated during the Western Front of WW1, after which the region was largely abandoned as a winegrowing area. But as a result, many parts of the region were spared from the chemical agricultural inputs of post-war France and the terroir here is now, largely, pristine, with Bruno’s property having never ever seen chemicals or tractor compaction.
Apeiron was made from pinot gris as well as some wild-growing berries from vines around the property, which were all grown on clay-limestone and macerated together in stainless steel. The wine is a deep shade of pink in the glass. It’s concentrated and rich, with layers of primary fruit and gorgeous floral and herbal varietal character, resolved acidity and phenolics and a feeling of profound depth which belies the relatively young vine-age.
This is incredibly well-made and sings of ultra-high quality soil and fruit. It’s an approachable style which is great to drink on its own, but is also deep enough to make a serious accompaniment to a range of dishes.
