Halcyon Days Friends Indeed 2023

A$53.00

Te Matau a Māui / Hawke's Bay, Aotearoa
Pinot Noir, Sangiovese, Chardonnay
11% ABV

Amy and Olly Hopkinson-Styles are two of our biggest heroes in the world of wine – dear old friends, brilliant winemakers and tirelessly passionate communicators within the global community of organic winemaking.

2023 was a challenging year in Te Matau a Māui, marked by the highly destructive Cyclone Gabrielle which struck Hawke’s Bay and the surrounding coastline in February. Yields for Amy and Olly were affected, but happily, the fruit that survived ripened well, and the resulting wines are, perhaps, the best that the pair have ever made.

Friends Indeed is mainly pinot noir from the beautiful Grava vineyard in Martinborough Wairarapa, with small amounts of sangiovese and chardonnay from the Osawa vineyard in Mangatahi, Hawke’s Bay. Both vineyards are BioGro certified organic.

The pinot noir was direct-pressed and fermented as a pale rosé, before being blended with some sangiovese rosé and macerated chardonnay. As usual with Amy and Olly, everything was done in tank in an effort to capture energy, tension and purity of fruit.

The final wine sits, stylistically, somewhere between an orange wine and a rosé – not dissimilar to 2022’s Heliacal Rise, albeit with a bit more power and orange hue. There are various shades of just-ripe red fruits and stone fruits, amongst some gentle leesy flavours and the signature backbone of fresh acidity.

Another effortlessly delicious offering from Amy and Olly which is primed for drinking again and again during the festive season.
