Jakob Tennstedt Waldportier 2018
Mosel, Germany
Riesling
13.5% ABV.
Former chef Jakob Tennstedt creates single-site riesling wines in the village of Traben-Trarbach in the Middle Mosel.
His parcels are situated in an elevated side-valley back from the river which in Celtic times was one of the most highly regarded terroirs in the region. Here, the steep slopes of blue and gray slate are home to some remarkable vines, the oldest of which were planted in 1910, and half of which are on their own roots.
All of the fruit is pressed to foudre and Jakob fastidiously tops up the casks during elevage.
These are classical wines of sheer precision. The cuvees differ in style, but all are characterised by brilliant varietal fruit and the sort of profound minerality that is only possible from own-rooted vines. They’re also incredibly stable, and are most rewarding when enjoyed over many hours (or even days) as they reveal layer after layer of information.
Of the three single site wines from this year, Waldportier is the broadest, richest and most tertiary – albeit still with abundant freshness and primary character.
Magnificent.
