Schnabel Blaufränkisch Kor 2021

A$170.00

South Styria, Austria
Blaufränkisch
13% ABV.

From two of our agricultural heroes, Karl and Eva Schnabel, this is one of the most magnificent red wines we’ve experienced in recent memory.

The Sausal hill on which Karl and Eva live and work was once an island that rose roughly 300 million years ago, creating what is now a steep, barren and rocky slope of quartz, flint and silica. This thrilling site, which lends itself to profoundly deep and mineral wines, is made even more special by the Schnabels themselves, who manage the property with as deep a level of connection and expertise as anyone we’ve ever met.

This is blaufränkisch from one of the two main blaufränkisch sites on the property. Like most of the Schnabel wines, it was destemmed and macerated for two weeks before being pressed to old barrels for elevage.

2021 is a phenomenal year, with excellent physiological ripeness being a feature of the wines across the board. There’s plenty of flesh in the mid-palate here, with elegant tannins and a subtle suggestion of wood – all resting upon a base of profound quartzy minerality.

Another jewel in the crown from Karl and Eva.
