Schnabel Morillon Hoch 2021
Styria, Austria
Chardonnay
12.5% ABV.
A grand wine from two of our agricultural heroes, this is deep, structured and layered macerated chardonnay, from a superb vintage.
The Sausal hill on which Karl and Eva live and work was once an island that rose roughly 300 million years ago, creating what is now a steep, barren and rocky slope of quartz, flint and silica. This thrilling site, which lends itself to profoundly deep and mineral wines, is made even more special by the Schnabels themselves, who manage the property with as deep a level of connection and expertise as anyone we’ve ever met.
In addition to its characteristic minerality, in 2021 this has particularly soft and sweet fruit on the back-palate, with good phenolic presence and layer upon layer of developed characters from the time in barrel.
This is an extraordinary offering from Karl and Eva and one to enjoy as it unfolds over an extended period, ideally with some food.
