Benoit Camus Terre Rouge 2021
Beaujolais, France
Gamay
11% ABV.
One of the great mystery men of Beaujolais, Benoit Camus has been quietly tinkering away with his five hectares in the south of Beaujolais for nearly 20 years.
The terroir here in the south is largely influenced by limestone and we find gamay grown on this argilo-calcaire mix can be intoxicatingly delicious.
Terre Rouge was fermented in concrete with a large proportion of whole bunches. It’s fine, detailed and wonderfully earthen, from the cooler and quite classical 2021 vintage. It's wonderfully aromatic and fresh, the essence of stalks filling the glass with restrained fruit sitting beneath. In essence, this is a light-bodied red wine, but a very serious style that is at its best with food – the stalks giving an extra dimension to the fine, crisp fruit. Very long and persistent on the palate. Top quality.
