Muster Graf Morillon 2021

South Styria, Austria
Chardonnay
12.5% ABV.

Sepp and Maria Muster farm 10 hectares of biodynamic vineyards in South Styria in the south of Austria, near the Slovenian border. They took over management of the domaine from Sepp’s father in 2000. The vines are old, for the most part, and have never ever seen chemical inputs.

The steep slopes here are home to the fascinating and unique opok soils which characterise much of South Styria. A marly, calcareous blend of clay, limestone and silt, these soils create a very distinctive shape of acidity which can be seen not just in the Muster wines but also in the sauvignon blanc wines of Schnabel, which are grown on similar soils very nearby.

Morillon is the local name for chardonnay. The fruit was destemmed and direct-pressed to very large format oak casks, where it rested for two years prior to bottling. It’s elegant and resolved, with fruit in the realm of citrus and quince, salinity, and with the imprint of calcareous soil evident both aromatically and in the linear drive of acidity.

A serious bottling from a top producer and a thrilling region for growing grapes.
